Access to pure macromolecular samples is a crucial prerequisite for a wide range of biological and biochemical research including NMR spectroscopy and X-ray crystallography. The production of large amounts of recombinant proteins is complex and tedious and requires besides expertise a functional infrastructure spanning chemicals, solutions, PCR and restriction enzymes, a variety of cloning plasmids and a choice of competent bacteria.

The Protein Expertise Platform (PEP) is a strong environment at KBC that provides researchers with the needed infrastructure and expert advice in questions of cloning, growth optimization and purification of proteins. The PEP stocks 20 different cloning vectors (containing a variety of fusion proteins and tags), four strains of E. coli bacteria, various antibiotics, different growth media and proteases.

Starting from a single PCR product with your gene of interest, you can quickly insert that gene in parallel into all of the vectors, transform different E. coli strains with these vectors and quickly screen for high productivity and solubility.
